Periodontal Disease and Your Overall Health
September 15, 2016
Periodontal disease starts in your mouth but has been linked to more serious conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and preterm births. Research has shown that moderate to severe periodontal disease increases the level of systemic inflammation throughout the body. Additionally, the same strain of bacteria that is found in periodontal disease has been found in blood vessels and plaque of individuals with cardiovascular disease.
Periodontal maintenance is ongoing treatment for periodontitis, which is a chronic and non-curable bacterial infection. While a regular cleaning is a procedure that is typically performed above the gum line and is provided at six-month intervals, Periodontal maintenance is more intensive, and is most commonly utilized for patients who have had active periodontal treatment. Periodontal maintenance is provided every three months.
